UP-CLOSE VISION: I was actually searching for images that involved people looking through magnifying glasses; having their eyes enlarged from the perspective of someone looking at a photograph of it. Yes, Irving Penn’s image was the inspiration for this post. Yet somehow I managed to find an image of the aforementioned enlarged eye, only without the actual magnifying glass involved. What’s particularly interesting about this image is that the man’s head (although concealed here) appears to be facing straight on, yet the eye in the glass circle is looking towards the right. The circle is also held in the curve of his left hand, creating a nice sense of symmetry. As a viewer you feel like you are being watched , despite the subject’s entire head being concealed. This simple photograph is eerie and yet probably didn’t intend to be. Sometimes that is what results from seemingly ‘boring’ candid photography.
